
Automate 2026: Material Handling Automation is Moving Beyond Equipment

For material handling leaders, automation is no longer about choosing the fastest shuttle, the most flexible AMR, or the most advanced robotic system. The bigger question is how to design an automation architecture that improves throughput, reduces labor dependency, increases operational resilience, and scales with business growth.
That was the key takeaway from LG CNS’s participation in Automate 2026 in Chicago. During the event, LG CNS met with system integrators, AMR/AGV providers, conveyor suppliers, physical security vendors, robotics companies, and other automation partners to understand where the North American market is heading.
Our primary focus was to identify partners who can support the strategic expansion of 4-way shuttle solutions and strengthen the broader ecosystem required to deliver end-to-end warehouse automation.
Many automation projects begin with a specific operational pain point: labor shortage, storage constraints, picking productivity, order cycle time, pallet movement, or space utilization. However, successful automation rarely comes from solving one issue in isolation. A shuttle system, AMR fleet, conveyor line, robotic cell, or security platform must fit into the broader operational flow across inbound, storage, replenishment, picking, packing, staging, shipping, and inventory control.
This is why system integration capability is becoming a critical success factor. For 4-way shuttle solutions in particular, value depends not only on equipment performance, but also on how the system is designed, integrated, commissioned, and stabilized within the customer’s operation. For C-level and operations leaders, the business case must be tied to throughput improvement, labor savings, space efficiency, service level performance, uptime, maintainability, CAPEX efficiency, and long-term total cost of ownership.
Automate 2026 also confirmed that the material handling market is moving from equipment-level competition to solution-level competition. The future is not AMR versus conveyor, shuttle versus AS/RS, or robotics versus manual labor. The future is about orchestrating the right mix of technologies for the right operating model.

Several trends stood out. Cobots continue to gain momentum in manufacturing automation due to their flexibility and lower deployment barriers. AI-powered vision, real-time sensing, edge computing, and Physical AI are becoming core capabilities rather than add-on features. Robot performance is increasingly dependent on the surrounding technology stack, including sensors, controls, software orchestration, and system integration. Humanoid robots attracted strong attention, but for most material handling environments, they remain a longer-term direction rather than an immediate operational solution.
For executives and operations managers, the message is clear: automation should start with a real operating problem, not with a piece of equipment.
